BROWN: Andrew (Andy)

Andy Brown of Carbon, AB, formerly Bassano, AB, passed away peacefully March 10, 2007 at the Drumheller Health Center with Maryanne at his side. Andy is survived by his daughters; Maryanne and Lester Stanvick of Carbon, AB, and Colleen and Melvin Newberry of Taber, AB. Grandpa will be remembered by his 4 grandchildren; Sandra Madder, Kimberly and Ashley Maerz, and Celina and Peter Newberry and 5 great grandchildren; Tristan and Trinity Madder, and Kendra, Denisha and Kadence Maerz. He is also survived by his brother, Earl Brown of Victoria, BC; 2 sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. Andy was predeceased by his wife, Jean, on December 19, 2000, daughter Debbie on February 22, 1979, parents Peter and Annie Brown, four sisters and five brothers.

Andy was born in Swanson, SK on November 15, 1918 and raised in Birsay, SK. He served in World War II as a mechanic. He and Jean (nee Walton) were married February 16, 1946 and moved to Bassano, AB in July 1950 where he lived until December 2002 when he moved to Carbon to live with Maryanne and Lester. In Bassano, he worked for Grant Bodmer, Texaco, Buds Service and lastly John Bergan. Andy enjoyed many happy times fishing at Blood Indian. He was a life member of Bassano Lodge #55, Bassano OES, Bassano Elks, Brooks Legion and Al Azhar Shrine.

HEPTONSTALL: Dale Walter  1947 - 2007

Following a lengthy illness, Dale Hemptonstall, beloved husband of Kate Heptonstall, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at the University of Alberta Hospital with his wife, daughter and sons by his side. Right up to the end, Dale was courageous, optimistic, and viewed each day with hope and positive thoughts.

Dale was born October 6, 1947 to Walter and Elsie Heptonstall. He was raised and educated in Drumheller. Dale loved his small town upbringing and was proud of his Alberta roots. As a young man, he worked throughout Alberta on various oil rigs. He was employed by McLean’s RV Centre and McLean’s Construction for 18 years as an RV mechanic, and assisting in the operation and maintenance of their trailer park and RV Centre. For the next eight years, until his health prevented him, he was employed by the Town of Drumheller as a Facility Attendant, working at the Town arena, swimming pool and Town facilities. He possessed a Journeyman RV Mechanic certificate, and in September 1991, was proud to receive a diploma with Highest Honors in Small Engine Repair. Dale was a real handyman. There was almost nothing he couldn’t fix. He especially loved fixing anything that had a motor. In his younger years he enjoyed camping with his four children and building go-carts and motor bikes. He was a lover of animals, especially his cat and two tiny dogs. His humour and wisdom were quite unique. There was nothing he loved more than the freedom of hopping of his motorcycle, speeding along the highway with the wind blowing in his face. One of his goals before he got ill, was to take his wife Kate to see the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans, which they accomplished with their trips to Vancouver, Victoria and then to Nova Scotia and PEI, with several in-between trips to Las Vegas and San Francisco.

Dale was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Elsie Heptonstall. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife and soul mate, Kate; daughter Carrie-Anne Dumont (Steve); sons Dale (Barbara), Scott and Terry (Mandy); his sisters Judy Lybbert, Debbie McKee (Paul); brother Jack; step-son Matt Patterson; good friend and sister-in-law Shannon Boyd and his grandchildren, who were so special to him, plus several nieces, nephews and in-laws, who thought highly of him. As per Dale’s request, he did not want to waste time with a funeral. He wanted to get on with the next leg of his journey ASAP! As in his life, we have honoured his wishes in death. Dale’s family would like to thank the medical and nursing staff at the Foothills Hospital Transplant Program; the Foothills Day Clinic staff; Dr. Kelly Burak; Alexis Hunt; the medical and nursing staff at the Transplant Program at the University of Alberta Hospital and Dr. Elizabeth Racz, of Drumheller, for the excellent care Dale received during his illness and in helping him through his final journey. McLEAN : Anna (nee Warkentin)  1927 - 2007

Anna McLean (nee Warkentin) of Drumheller died peacefully surrounded by her loving family in the Drumheller Hospital, March 3, 2007, 79 years of age (80th year). Beloved mother of Sandy (Carol), Debbie (Serafino), Don (deceased) (Heather), Peter Wayne (Kathy), Lorne (Debbie), Beverley (Lanny) as well as 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Anna was born in Sunnyslope, AB on May 20, 1927 to Jacob and Justine Warkentin, the fourth of nine children. Her growing up years were spent in Munson and the Handhills until Drumheller became her home. Anna was predeceased by her parents, her husband Peter, her son Don, sisters Katie and Heidi, brother Irvine, and brother-in-law, Joe Gerodo. She is survived by her sisters, Elizabeth and Betty (Sam) as well as brothers, Nick (Jean), Jake and Ed (Shirley) and brother-in-laws, Joe Doshier and Doug Krasman.

Anna was never afraid of hard work. As well as working with Pete at the Red Head Service Station where she ran the restaurant, she also worked with Johnny Forgo at North Drum Grocery, for Roman Chamchuk at Roman’s Restaurant and finally, at the age of 62, retired from Garry’s Welding. Anna and Pete enjoyed being “on the go” whether it be garage sale-ing on a Saturday morning or travelling to Las Vegas and points beyond in their motor home. They spent many weekends with family and friends, camping, fishing and attending rodeos. If a casino was in the vicinity, they tried their luck there. It was all part of the fun. Anna had many talents and skills. Her famous bannock and bread was enjoyed by both family and friends. Her cookie jar was always full. Anna was a kind and gentle person who loved unconditionally her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her ability to see good in everyone combined with her non-judgmental attitude meant that she was loved in return. She will be missed by her many friends at Riverview Terrace as well as her host of friends in the wider community. Anna’s children, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren were the most important things to her. “To love and be loved is the Greatest Gift of All and that is what she gave to us.”

A celebration of Anna’s life was held at Knox United Church, Drumheller on Thursday, March 8, 2007 at 2 p.m. with Jerry Beskowine officiating. Following the service, lunch was served at St. Anthony’s Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Palliative Care and Hemodialysis at the Drumheller Area Health Foundation. NOTLAND: Olga Frances (nee Tomenchuk)

Olga Frances Notland (nee Tomenchuk) of Calgary AB, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, March 9th, 2007 at the age of 80. She will be dearly missed by family and friends within the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and hearing community. She was predeceased by her daughter Alva in 1989, and her husband Alf, in 1998. She is survived by her daughter Silva May Notland and Grand-dog, Bear of Calgary, who miss her deeply. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 16th, 2007 at 2 pm, at the Bow Valley Christian Church: 5300 - 53 Ave. NW in Calgary. Viewing to take place prior to the service at 12 pm.

WALKER: Amelia (nee Leonhardt)  1915 - 2007

Amelia Walker (Leonhardt) of Drumheller died peacefully in the Drumheller Hospital on March 8, 2007 at 92 years of age. She is survived by her children Stan (Diane), Diane Winkler, Irene (Sandy Brown), Murray, Mary (Dennis McAreavy), Susan (Bruce Rees), and her brother, as well as 17 granchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and her brother, Walter Leonhardt of Calgary. She is predeceasd by her children Jeannette Valentini, Judy Marshall, Don Walker and her brothers: Herbert, Fredrick Reinhardt, Edward, August, Victor, Jacob; and sisters: Alma Naffin and Eugenia Lippolt.

Amelia was born on January 20, 1915 in Drumheller. She attended school in Drumheller and worked at a dairy until she married Bill Walker in 1941. She and Bill farmed in the Horseshoe Canyon area for 20 years where they raised nine children. They moved to Drumheller in 1961. Amelia was widowed for 31 years, later moving to the Manor and then finally into the Sunshine Lodge. She can be attributed to working hard for her children and teaching them many life skills and values. She took pride in cooking, making healthy home cooked meals. She had a pioneer spirit - growing a garden, raising chickens, canning, cooking and baking.  She loved playing board games and card games. She took pride and loved seeing her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services to be held at Grace Lutheran Church on Thursday, March 15th at 2 p.m. The family thanks all the nursing staff at the Drumheller Hospital and the Sunshine Lodge for the dedicated care given during her stay. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Drumheller Health Centre or Sunshine Lodge.
