POWELL: Marion (Barlow) 1914 - 2007
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Marion Powell
(Barlow) on January 29, 2007 at 92 years of age. Marion was born April 5, 1914
in Springhill, Nova Scotia and moved to the Drumheller Valley at the age of 7.In
her early 20’s while attending church she took notice of Ken Powell singing in
the choir. The couple spent many dates on long walks and once in awhile a trip
to the Horseshoe Canyon to take in the view. After a 5 year courtship, Ken
became a bookkeeper in the mines instead of a miner because Marion had said, “I
wouldn’t marry a man working in the mines”. They were married on June 25, 1940
at the Knox United Church. Five days after the wedding, Marion was asked to
leave her job at the Town of Drumheller by the “City Fathers” as it was
inappropriate for a married lady to fill a job that could be filled by a single
woman. In 1947 the couple had their only child, Ross. She taught Sunday school
at the Knox United Church, sang in the Church choir, and she was a member of the
Eastern Star for 55 years. In 1963 Marion and Ken moved to the Lethbridge area
until returning home to the Drumheller Valley in 1996. They were the cute
elderly couple always walking downtown hand in hand.
Marion leaves to mourn her passing her devoted husband of 67 years Ken; son Ross (Jo-Anne); granddaughter Jolene (Darcy) Hems; grandson Dustin; and her pride and joy, great granddaughter Amanda. At the family’s request there will be no service. Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Chapel entrusted with arrangements.
