BERTSCH: Ella 1913 - 2006

IN MEMORY OF ELLA BERTSCH

Ella Bertsch was born July 20, 1913 on the family farm south of Carbon. Her parents, Jacob and Sophie Bertsch, along with her 10 older brothers and sisters had just moved to Canada in the spring of 1913. Ella grew up on the farm, attended the Freudental Baptist Church and went to the Mosher School. She was baptized along with her brother Otto and sister Hilda in 1930 in the Kneehill Creek by Rev. Itterman. Ella was very skilled at caring for other people and had many jobs using her abilities in this area. Her last place of employment was at the Drumheller Nursing Home where she worked with diligence and cheerfulness each day. Ella had a long and enjoyable retirement spending time with her many friends and her large family. Nothing thrilled her more than to be able to entertain, complete with a delicious meal. Ella passed away peacefully on February 18, 2006 at the Bethany Nursing Home in Red Deer. She was predeceased by her parents, seven brothers, four sisters, and 13 nieces and nephews. She leaves to celebrate her life, her sister Hilda Ohlhauser and her brother Otto, along with 19 nieces and nephews, as well as numerous friends. Ella was completely dedicated to her Christian faith and to her family. She will be missed by all who knew her.

BERTSCH: Otto   1919 - 2006

Otto Bertsch was the 14th and youngest child of Jacob and Sophia Bertsch. He was born in the family farmhouse on March 11, 1919 and lived in that house for the next 77 years. Otto farmed the same land for more than 60 years and considered it a privilege to do so. On December 3, 1946, Otto married Gladys Ohlhauser and God granted them 54 years of shared life and love.  Their last 4 1/2 years together were spent in Three Hills where they enjoyed many good friendships. Jesus was the Lord of Otto's life. He testified of that through his baptism in 1930 in the Kneehill Creek. He was whole heartedly committed to the community of faith he experienced in the Freudenthal Baptist Church and the Carbon Baptist Church. While he served in a number of capacities in the church over the years, it was using his tenor voice to glorify God in various quartets and choirs that brought him the most joy. The last few months of his life were spent in the St. Mary's Nursing Home in Trochu, AB.  On March 9, 2006, two days short of this 87th birthday, Otto went to be with Jesus and the many dear friends who have gone before him. He loved his family dearly and so leaves to mourn his sister Hilda Ohlhauser, his daughter and son-in-law, Margo and Bill Baldwin, his son and daughter-in-law, Leland and Jennell Bertsch, four grandchildren, Myla-Rae and Correy Baldwin, Mia and Nathan Bertsch, and many other relatives and friends. We rejoice in our hope in Christ and celebrate a man who lived gratefully, contentedly, generously, and honorably. A memorial service was held at the Carbon Baptist Church on Friday, March 27, 2006.  Memorial donations, if so desired, may be made to a Nigerian medical mission project (cheques payable to Carbon Baptist Church, Box 429, Carbon, AB) Mountain View Funeral Chapel Trochu entrusted with arrangements.
