Marshall: Arthur Thomas  1916 - 2005

The farming community of Delia lost one of its long time residents with the passing of Arthur Thomas Marshall at the age of 88 years. Art's influence in the community was evident as he operated Delia Farm Supplies for 59 years helping farmers with their equipment needs and providing mechanical services. His sense of responsibility to the community was always his prime concern ensuring farmers got the seed in the ground the cows fed and the crops in the bin. The wood stove and the kettle at the shop were always ready for coffee and conversation. He had a keen sense of right and wrong and was very outspoken in his beliefs. He was a man of his word and honest to a fault. Art attended school at Hillview and Georgetown until grade nine and then high school in Delia. He worked helping his dad on the farm and in the coalmine and later received his mechanics ticket in Calgary. In the later 30's, Art and Carl Albert purchased farm land south of Delia and farmed together until retirement. From 1940 to 1942 he was stationed in Hamilton, Ontario during World War II. His business career started when he purchased the operation Central Garage from Elza Long in 1945 taking over the John Deere Agency. He started and ran the UFA Bulk Fuel Agency in 1946 to 1959. Over the years he also sold Chrysler Products and Texaco Gas. In 1947 his brother Carl Albert joined in the business until Carl purchased his own farm outside of Delia. At that time the business name changed to A.T. Marshall Farm Implements. The business was incorporated to Delia Farms Supplies in 1965 and continued to grow. In 1969 he expanded to Hanna starting Hanna Farm Equipment, one of the only remaining service centers for the farming community. Art was born near Delia on the Homestead of his parents John and Jean
Marshall on April 14, 1916. He married Mary Ruth DeMott on October 23, 1948. After their marriage, Art began farming the Hudsonıs Bay Land near Michichi. Many happy hours were spent working the land with his favorite green machines. Their family consisted of six children and grew to include 12 grandchildren that he was very proud of. His interests later in life included visiting, coffee at Lukeıs, coffee at the Drum Co-op, playing crib with his grandchildren, watching baseball, doing whiz words, reading and keeping up with the ever changing practice of farming. Art was a devoted Catholic and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. Arthur Thomas Marshall of Delia passed away peacefully with his family by his side on January 16, 2005 at the Hanna Long Term Care Facility. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Carol (Steve) Cooper, Bill (Jennifer), Amy (Stephen) and Allison Cooper; Tom (Helen) Marshall, Brett (Rhiannon), Jennifer (Pascal), Danny (Amber), and Taylor Marshall; Garett (Ronaye) Willington; Teresa (Gary) Gilson, Dennis, Kelsey and Lisa Gilson; Mary Ellen (Randy) Herzog, Ashley and Marcus Herzog; special aunt, Mrs. Francis Ambrogiano; his brothers Mike (Maude) and Carl (Florence) Marshall; sisters Anne McAuliffe, Mary Long, Edith Larson, Irene McKay, Kay Robertson, Lorraine (Ken) Cooney, Josie Roline, and Elsie Limpert; and numerous nieces and nephews. The Train of Life

Some folks ride the train of life
looking out the rear,
Watching miles of life roll by,
and marking every year.
They sit in sad remembrance,
of wasted days gone by,
And curse their life for what it was,
and hang their head and cry.
But I donıt concern myself with that,
I took a different vent,
I look forward to what life holds,
and not what has been spent.
So strap me to the engine,
as securely as I can be,
I want to be out in front,
to see what I can see.
I want to feel the winds of change,
 blowing in my face,
I want to see what life unfolds,
as I move from place to place.
I want to see whatıs coming up,
not looking at the past,
Lifeıs too short for yesterdays,
it moves along too fast.
So if the ride gets bumpy,
while you are looking back,
Go up front, and you may find,
your life has jumped the track.
It's all right to remember,
thatıs part of history,
But up frontıs where it's happening,
there's so much mystery.
The enjoyment of living,
is not where we have been,
Itıs looking ever forward,
to another year and ten.
Itıs searching all the byways,
never should you refrain,
For if you want to live your life,
you've gotta drive the train!
