Powell: Margaret Jean (Day)
Died in Drumheller at the age of 68 years after a brief battle with cancer. Jean
was born as one of three siblings on a homestead in Bowell just outside of
Medicine Hat and she had three aspirations in her life: to become a teacher, get
married and have a family. During her time she accomplished all three having
convocated from the University of Calgary with a BEd and then heading north to
the Yukon to teach. Although she spent just a short time there, she always
reflected on her first teaching job with fond memories. It is when she moved
back to southern Alberta that she had a chance meeting with her to-be husband
Douglas at a dance in Jenner. It was love at first sight and within a year they
were married and had two children, Craig and Carla. Jean and Doug had many
adventures together including owning their own floor laying business and then
switching to selling ladies fashions. Jean spent 35 years enriching the minds of
young people through her love of teaching, with the last 20 years teaching
English at the Big Country Education Consortium in Drumheller until her
retirement. Those who were privileged enough to have her as a teacher would be
hard pressed to find someone who had a truer love of English language and
literature. Friends and relatives would also recall Jean as someone who always
lent an ear or offered a word of advice when needed, could make a person laugh
with her razor sharp wit or make their taste buds dance with one of her
home-cooked meals. Jean will be sorrowfully missed by her husband of 38 years,
Douglas and her daughter Carla as well as her brothers Donald (Freddie) of
Calgary and Scotty (Colleen) of Edmonton. She was predeceased by her mother
Margaret, father Stewart and son Craig; all of whom were sure to greet her on
the flip side. It was Jeanıs request that there be no funeral as her life was
celebrated every day by those close to her. In lieu of flowers, those who wish
can donate to the charity of their choice in her memory. Arrangements are being
made through Courtney-Winterıs Funeral Chapel in
Drumheller.
