Holmen: Inger  1909 - 2005

Inger Holmen was born June 9, 1909 in Easton California, the 4th child of Pastor and Mrs. Peter Rasmussen.  The family moved to Grant Michigan in 1913 where she started public school.  In 1920, the family moved to Dalum where her father became the first Minister of the newly formed congregation. She finished grade school at Dalum and went to Grand View College in Des Moines, Iowa to take her high school.  Following this, she taught at her father's folk school at Dalum, a private school for Danish immigrants.  There she met a young carpenter who had recently arrived from Denmark: Alfred Holmen. That summer the young people organized a folk dancing group. She needed a partner and was attracted to this young man the attraction was mutual.  So they danced.  This ended when Alfred had a serious accident on the job site resulting in three years in and out of hospital in Edmonton. In the meantime, Inger carried on with her career plans.  She went to Seattle, Washington and attended the Cornish School of Drama and from there to the drama department of the Banff School of Fine Arts.  Following that, she joined the drama department at Mount Royal College in Calgary and later became the director of the department.  During these years, Alfred and Inger had kept in touch through correspondence. Unknown to each they had both kept these letters.  While teaching in Calgary there were weekend visits off and on.  Following a suggestion from the Drama Department of the University of Alberta, she left Mount Royal College and opened a private studio in Drumheller.  Alfred was working in Drumheller.  As a result, 10 years after the summer of folk dancing they were married in June 1940.  The following year they started their own contracting business under the name of Holmen Construction, which they continued to operate until Alfred's death in December 1978.  In 1945 their son Linden was born. For years, Inger was involved in the music festival in Drumheller. Church was always an important part of her life.  She taught Sunday school, was a member of the church council and Evangelical Lutheran Women.  Through the years, she has spent hours visiting at the hospital and nursing home and made many friends.

She is survived by her son Linden, daughter-in-law Denise, granddaughter Roszan, one brother Folmer (Gerda), three sisters-in-law, Pearl Rasmussen, Margaret Rasmussen, and Mildred Rasmussen, one brother-in-law Herluf Jensen and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Dalum, Alberta  Saturday, December 17, 2005 at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Dan Hendrickson officiating.  Interment followed in the Dalum Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery.
