Allard: Lyda
Lyda Allard (Looy) of Edmonton, AB, formerly of Coronation, AB, beloved mother,
grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away on April 5, 2004 in the
Palliative Care Unit of Norwood Capital Care in Edmonton, AB. Lyda was born
March 14, 1920 in Holland and immigrated to Canada with her parents in 1921.
Lyda will be fondly remembered by her two daughters, Jane (Ernie) Dupuis of Drumheller, AB and Jeannette (Terry) Footz of Edmonton, AB. Also mourning her loss are grandchildren Sheila (Ray) Bulbeck of Drumheller, AB, Cheryl (Peter) Murray of Calgary, AB, Wendy (Rob) Mahan of Calgary, AB, Chris Footz of Edmonton, AB, and Tim (Stacey) Footz of Edmonton, AB; as well as six great-grandsons, Michael and James Murray, Tyler and Jarrett Mahan, and Benjamin and Nathan Footz. Other family left to cherish her memory are brothers Cor (Lynette) Looy of Turner Valley, AB, Dick (Barb) Looy of Okotoks, AB, Gerrit (Hazel) Looy of High River, AB; and sister Agatha Turbak of Elkhorn, MB; as well as many caring nephews and nieces, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Francis in 1997; sister Jenny Glasier; brothers Mart and Floris Looy; and her parents Dick and Agatha Looy. Lyda, with her parents and family, farmed in the Veteran and Throne, AB areas until moving south of Coronation, AB in 1940 and married Francis Allard in 1941.
Lyda had a passion for life and approached every day with a positive outlook and faced all her challenges head on. She led the life of a very busy farm wife, mother, gardener, poultry raiser, cow milker, harvester, cook, canner, etc. With all her home produce and preserves, she served many bountiful meals to family and friends. She also enjoyed the harvest of the fields and could pitch bundles with the best of them! She wasnıt afraid to drive the tractor or even tackle the combine. Although, very busy with farm life, she some how found time to enjoy special interests. Her main hobby and gifted talent was baking and decorating delicious sugar cookies - for each special holiday; Easter, Christmas, Halloween, etc. and decorating special cakes for birthdays, anniversaries, farewells, retirements and especially weddings. She created many beautiful masterpieces and often only had pictures or the "brides ideas" as guidelines. The cakes travelled to many areas of the province and Francis was the handiman in structural assembly and packaging. Lyda belonged to the Order of the Royal Purple and was the 'Honoured Royal Lady' for two terms during her membership, as well as holding many other positions and took great pride in holding a perfect attendance record for 24 years. She was also a member of the Legion Ladies' Auxiliary and volunteered for many other community activities - as the Farmerıs Market, Coronation Fair Days, bowling bookkeeper, ceramics, church activities, etc. She enjoyed family camping trips, playing cards and games and was a beautiful knitter of afghans and dishcloths. She made friends easily and couldn't say 'no' to the many requests for helping with 'this job or that'. Following retirement to Coronation in 1979, Francis and Lyda travelled on many bus tours to all parts of Canada and the United States. They enjoyed the Ludwig bus rides and making many new friends from Drumheller on these trips. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 10, 2004 at the Trinity United Church in Cornation, AB with Rev. Mervyn Penfound officiating. A family burial followed at Coronation Cemetery. Lunch was served to family and friends at the Elks Hall by the Federal Friendship Club, members of the Royal Purple, and community friends. A very special thanks to these ladies, as well as pallbearers, Ray Bulbeck, Peter Murray, Rob Mahan, Chris Footz, Tim Footz and John Mac Gougan and the staff at the Parkview Funeral Chapel. The family also wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks for the special care given by the staff at the Norwood Palliative Care Unit and the Palliative Home Care Team in Edmonton, AB. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation c/o #345, 10909 Jasper Ave., Edmonton, AB T5J 3L9, or Capital Care Health Home Care (Palliative Program) #402, 10216 - 124 Street, Edmonton, AB T5N 4A3.

Sands: Mark Douglas April 28, 1921 - April 10,
2004
Mark passed away peacefully on April 10, 2004 with his family by his side. He
was born on April 28, 1921 in Rosedale, AB where he resided for 81 years and
then moved to the Drumheller Continuing Care Centre. Mark led a full and active
life. He grew up on the family homestead where
he and his wife Willia, farmed and raised their family until 1988 and then moved
to Rosedale. At a very young age he enjoyed going with his Dad to sell milk and
eggs to the coalminers of Rosedale and Star mine. School was not Marks'
ambition. He graduated from grade eight and then worked on the farm. It wasnıt
long before he started what would turn out to be his life's true ambition owning
a truck and hauling rock of some form. His first business was delivering coal
to the farmers in the surrounding area and later along with his partners, he
successfully owned and operated three businesses: Subway Coal, Fish Lake Sand
and Gravel, and M&D Sands Trucking. He was well known and respected in the
business community for his honesty and integrity. Mark loved the Drumheller
Valley. He supported and promoted it any way he could. In later years he
became quite the tour guide providing visitors with knowledge of the coalmines
and the valley in general. He has received numerous letters of appreciation
from people all over the world thanking him for his hospitality. Markıs family
was always his top priority and they could count on him whenever they needed
him. He was kind to all animals, but the family dog and cats were treated the
same as any family member. Throughout his years, Mark loved to travel with his
family; Alaska was one of his favorite spots. Mark supported his son Daleıs
hockey career and he loved to share his fond memories of the championship they
won. In later years he enjoyed watching his grandsons play or quite often would
stop at the arena just to watch a game. Although Mark always enjoyed a good
visit with his friends and family he was the happiest on a rubber tire loader
moving shale, dirt or snow. Mark will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed
by his son Dale (Suzanne) Sands of Rosedale, his daughter Sandra (Mark) Nicklom
of Drumheller; his grandchildren Brenda (Kevin) Kerik of Red Deer, Brent (Lisa)
Sands of Drumheller, Randy (Laura) Nicklom of Calgary, Kacey and Tyler Nicklom
of Drumheller; great-grandchildren Tamara and Jeff Kerik of Red Deer and Ciena
and Danica Sands of Drumheller. Mark will also be sadly missed by his sister
Bessie Brown of Drumheller; nephews Carson (Susan) Brown of Rosedale and Al
(Marianne) and Ben Jamieson of St. Alberta, and nieces Pat (Frank) and Sharon
(Dave). Mark was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Willia Sands, his
daughter-in-law Lorenza Sands and his parents Ezra and Euda Sands. If friends so
desire, donations in memory of Mark Sands can be made to the D.A.H.F. Continuing
Care Centre, 351 - 9 St. N.W. Drumheller, AB T0J 0Y1, or that of the donor's
choice would be appreciated. Courtney-Winterıs Funeral Home is in charge of all
arrangements. A memorial service to celebrate Markıs life will be held on
Friday, April 16, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the Rosedale Community Hall.
