Graham: John 1912 - 2003
It is with great sorrow and sadness that the family of Mr. John Graham must
announce his passing. John passed away peacefully at the Drumheller Hospital
Thursday, September 25, 2003, surrounded by his loving family. John was born in
Calgary February 28, 1912, to John and Isabella Graham, who had immigrated to
Canada from Scotland in 1906 and 1908 respectfully. They operated an 85 head
dairy ranch in the Chestermere Lake District until 1915 when they sold their
land and moved their dairy herd to Drumheller where they operated near the
Drumheller Penitentiary. In 1919, they sold their land and dairy and moved to
East Coulee where they purchased land in the Wintering Hills District, south
east of East Coulee, to resume ranching. John and his brother Bill built up the
East Coulee Ranch to it's present size, adding an irrigated farm near Bassano to
the operation to ensure a winter feed supply. The ranch became known as
Canada's largest pony ranch, supplying ponies to the coal mines and later for
pony chuckwagon and chariot racing. John was one of Canada's last, true
cowboys. He was well respected by the ranching community as a true horseman,
and his abilities at breaking horses were legendary. In fact, it was often said
that if John had pursued a rodeo career, he would have won it all. This was not
to be because for John, building up the ranch came first. John had a true love
of life and all it had to offer and he had a true belief in the goodness of
people. He never lost faith in people and he never lost his innocence. John's
home was always open, a coffee, a meal, or a bed always available and good
conversation was assured. He gave freely of his time and finances when asked,
donating ponies for local raffles, hay rides for local functions (where he would
purchase each child on his wagon a pop, because, well, it was hot out). If
fact, without his extensive support of the East Coulee School Restoration and
Atlas Coal Mine Restoration, these projects would not have proceeded. The only
thing John loved more than his ranch, and cattle and horses, was his family.
Raising a family later in life, John always said that he had been blessed to be
able to see his family grow up, and to spend time with his precious
grandchildren. John leaves to mourn his loving wife of 50 years, Yvonne; and his
children, John Barry, Robin Byron (Helen), Darryl Duane (Louise), and Sandra
Lori (Mark). He also leaves his precious grandchildren Robin, Olivier,
Mitchell, Christopher, Averie, and Auberon; and his special sister-in-law, Lola
and her children, Shawna (Joe), Charlene (Don), Shane, and Troy (Nanette).
John's step grandchildren Oxana (Bill) and Jane, and step great grandson, Kevin
will also miss him. John also leaves to mourn his sisters, Kate, Margaret, and
Ethel (Melvin); as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by
his father John in 1944, his mother Bella in 1963, his sister May in 1988, and
his brother Bill in 1990. A celebration of the very special life of John Graham
will be held at the Knox United Church in Drumheller at 2 p.m., Wednesday,
October 1. A luncheon will follow at St. Anthony's Catholic Hall. In keeping
with John's love of socializing, a reception with live music and cash bar will
be held at the Drumheller Inn following the luncheon. All are welcome. John was
the most loving husband, caring father, proud grandfather, kind brother,
considerate brother-in-law, welcoming uncle and loyal friend that any of us
could every have had. Good-bye Dad. We love you, we miss you, we will never
forget you. We are privileged to have shared in your life and honored to have
been with you when the Lord called. We will cherish every moment we had with
you. Good-bye for now.
Our great loss is
Heaven's wonderful gain.
Happy trails to you,
Until we meet again.
