Bakgaard: Evelyn May (nee Rieger) 1924 - 2003
Evelyn May Bakgaard passed away peacefully October 31, 2003, at Carewest Signal
Pointe in Calgary, AB. Evelyn was born January 20, 1924, in Delia, AB to
Christine and Thomas F. Rieger. During her high school years, Evelyn played ice
hockey, softball and helped edit the Delia High School yearbook while competing
academically with her twin sister Alice. The twins graduated with honours from
Delia High School in 1942. This was followed with teacher's training at the
Edmonton Normal School where they played varsity fastball. They continued their
training during the next few summers at both the U of A and U of Victoria.
Evelyn and Alice taught at a number of rural one-room schools in Alberta and
often shared the same teacherage. Evelyn's first teaching position was at Haven
School near Beaverlodge, AB. This was followed by teaching positions at Redland
Colony School, Majestic Lake School, Robson Lake School before moving to Calgary
to teach at North Mount Pleasant School and at Haultain School where she taught
Grade 1 from 1946 until 1957. Evelyn was very proud of her students and
delighted in following their accomplishments. After 14 years of teaching, Evelyn
retired to devote her life to her children and her parents. Evelyn was an avid
researcher and learner and she loved baking, collecting recipes, reading, letter
writing, vegetable and flower gardening, bicycling, playing softball, walking,
skating, current events, art appreciation, cross-country skiing, traveling,
hiking and dancing, as well as various volunteer activities. Evelyn will be
intensely missed by her beloved children Stanley T. Bakgaard (Devra Rooney and
Mia Maluchi of Portland, OR) and Wendy E. Bakgaard and her much loved son-in-law
Timothy P. Blumenschein of Calgary. Evelyn will also be missed by her siblings:
Violette Baskerville in Victoria, B.C.; Bertha "Caroline" Fraser in Calgary, AB;
W.C. "Bill" Rieger of Rockyford, AB; her identical twin Alice M. Douglas in
Drumheller, AB; Louise Smith in Preston, ON; and cousins in Germany and England,
as well as numerous nieces and nephews and friends. Evelyn was predeceased by
her sister Marguerite Dare; her brothers Thomas F. Rieger II and Henry J. Rieger,
and her nephew William J. Douglas. Evelyn's family extends their sincere
gratitude to the wonderfully caring staff and volunteers at Extendicare Cedars
Villa and Carewest Signal Pointe for their tender loving care during Mom's last
years. Thank you to Dr. Elizabeth Woolner and Dr. Beverly Taylor and their staff
for their continued care and concern. Stan, Wendy and Tim thank all those who
have been so supportive and caring to them over these years. In lieu of flowers,

Elworthy: Vickey Frances
Vickey Frances Elworthy, beloved wife of Bob Elworthy of Bowden passed away at
her residence on November 5, 2003 at the age of 47 years. Born at Lindsay,
Ontario, Vickey developed a love of horses and the outdoors. Moving to Alberta
with Bob in the fall in 1979, they were married in Bowden in 1984. They lived
in several communities in Central Alberta before moving back to Bowden. Besides
her husband Bob, Vickey is survived by one daughter, Brooke Elworthy, Edberg,
AB; mother Ruth Taylor, Fenelon Falls, ON; a sister Glenda, Sombra, ON. Vickey
was predeceased by her father Norman Taylor. Memorial services were held on
Monday, November 10, 2003 at 2 p.m. from Mountain View Funeral Chapel, 5226 - 46
St., Olds, AB with interment at the Bowden Cemetery. Memorial tributes may be

Filkohazy: Julia 1917 - 2003
Julia Filkohazy of Bassano, beloved wife of the late Frank Filkohazy, passed
away peacefully in Bassano on November 3, 2003 at the age of 86 years. Born in
Hungary on March 19, 1917 Julia came to Canada with her family at the age of 13
and finished her schooling in East Coulee. Julia and Frank were married on
March 19, 1934 in Drumheller and resided in East Coulee. They moved to
Makepeace in 1950 and farmed until Julia retired to Bassano in 1974. She was a
member of the Knox Presbyterian Church, Willing Workers, Royal Purple and a
Charter Member of the Bassano Drop-in Centre. Julia loved her family,
especially her grandchildren, gardening, playing cards at the Drop-in Centre and
she loved to win. She will be remembered for her cooking, baking and her
willingness to help others. Julia was predeceased by her husband Frank on April
22, 1967, her parents and her five siblings. She is survived by her loving
family, daughter Marilyn Thew and her husband Melvin of Hussar; four sons, Frank
Jr. of Calgary, Robert and his wife Arlene of Hussar, Ken and his wife Barb of
Crossfield and Paul and his wife Janice of Bassano; ten grandchildren; seven
great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held
at 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 6 from Knox Presbyterian Church, Bassano Rev.
Bob Cruickshank officiated. Honorary Pallbearers were Wendy-Ann Fenton, Melanie
Thew and Carey Taubert. Active Pallbearers were Glenn Thew, Brett Filkohazy,
Clayton Filkohazy, Derrick Filkohazy, Jason Filkohazy, Trevor Filkohazy and
Shawn Filkohazy. Interment followed at Bassano Cemetery. In memory of Julia,

Landon: Dylan Eugene - Born November 5, 2003 - Died
November 7, 2003
Some people only dream of angels, we held one in our arms.
Dylan is survived by his loving parents Dana and Rhonda Landon; his big sister
Kearra; his grandparents Marvin and Twylia Menssa, Doug Gilroy and Darcy Landon
and Karen Ohlhauser; his great-grandparents Dwight and Carol Landon, Martha
Ziegler, and George and Helen Gilroy. He is also remembered by many aunts,
uncles and cousins. We would like thank everyone that has kept us in their
thoughts and prayers, and thank you to all the doctors and nurses that helped us
so much.

MacCrimmon: Maxwell J. 1919 - 2003
"Max brought out the best in everyone because Max gave everyone his best."
Max's family will miss our Dad and Grandpa/Poppa. He passed away peacefully on
Friday, November 7, 2003 at the Drumheller Regional Health Complex after what he
said was a glorious and fulfilling life. He was the last member of the
MacCrimmon family, homesteaders in Verdant Valley. Max was born there in 1919
and lived in Drumheller all his life with the exception of five years when he
was serving with 3rd Division Field Park Ordinance (1941-46). Max worked for a
short time at the coalmines and then Excelsior Motors for the next 35 years,
retiring 1984. During retirement he enjoyed many motor-home trips with his
brother Wally and sister-in-law Margaret. He was always ready to go, no matter
where. His special weekend in later years was the Canmore Highland Games.
He was always there for his family and enjoyed watching his grandchildren
experience life. Max survived by his daughters Margaret (Lyle) Dowling of
Calgary; Wendy (Murray) Rowledge of Erskine; grandchildren Ron (Nadine) Dowling
and Donna Tuttle of Calgary, Rhiannon, Sarah and Cody Rowledge of Erskine and
great granddaughter Taylor Dowling. Max will be missed by his special friend and
companion Marj Sallows and her family, sister-in-law Margaret MacCrimmon;
several nieces and nephews and a host of wonderful caring friends. A Memorial
Service was held in Drumheller on Monday, November 10, 2003 at 2 p.m. from the
Knox United Church. Family is requesting in lieu of flowers donations may be
made to the Drumheller Area Health Foundation or the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

Schmitz: Verlie Leona "Leona" March 18, 1935 -
October 13, 2003
It is with great sorrow and sadness for the family of Leona (nee Norman) Schmitz
who left us during the early hours of October 13, 2003 at the age of 68. Her
passing came after the most courageous battle with cancer. Leona leaves to mourn
her daughter Carol and husband Jay Trenaman of Fort McMurray; son Bruce Schmitz
and wife Lorrie of Bon Accord; sister Marlene and husband Jim West of Sauble
Beach, ON; brother Allen Norman and wife Lois of Calgary; grandchildren Tenille
Trenaman and fiance Colin Hefferan, Jay D. Trenaman and Amber Larocque, Tracey
Schmitz and Daron Ringdahl, Sarah Schmitz and Natasha Sawchuk; great
grandchildren Kolby Schmitz-Ringdahl, Mackenzie Trenaman and special great
grandchild, Allyson Power. Leona also leaves to mourn numerous neices, nephews,
cousins and aunts. To know Leona was to love her as she leaves many memories to
all her dear friends. Leona was predeceased by her husband Scotty, parents Svea
and Hjlmar Norman, mother-in-law Jessie Schmitz, sister-in-law Patricia and
husband Ted Hutchison, also her dear aunt and uncle, Ted and Norma Oberg. A
memorial service will be held at the Burgar Memorial Chapel (4817 - 51 Avenue,
Camrose) on Saturday, November 22, 2003 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Brian Hunter from
St. Mary's Hospital Pastoral Care officiating. Inurnment will take place in the
Meeting Creek Cemetery. Refreshments will follow in the Meeting Creek Community

Society, Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation, The Redwater Health Care Centre

Sharpe: (B.J.) William Joseph 1983 - 2003
It is with extreme sorrow the family of B.J. Sharpe announce his sudden passing
on November 8, 2003. He will be sadly missed by his mother Jackie Buck of
Edmonton and his father Douglas Sharpe of Nampa; grandparents Gordon and Clara
Sharpe of Morrin and Lorne Sadler of Quinell, B.C.; special friend Sara; sister
Amanda (James), Chelsie, Briann and Shantal; brothers Shawn, Joshua, Tyler and
Dillon; and niece Alexis; and many aunts, uncles and numerous cousins. Cremation
took place November 11, 2003. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the
D.A.R.E. Program.
