Campbell, Elizabeth Anne 1925 - 2003
Elizabeth Anne Campbell, passed away suddenly in the Powell
River General Hospital on January 30, 2003. Elizabeth was predeceased by her
husband of 57 years, Stanley Enos Campbell, in April 2002. Elizabeth will be
deeply missed by her daughters Bonnie, Nora, Brenda as well as two
grandchildren, Jason Stanley and Stacey Elizabeth. Elizabeth is also survived
by her sister Jeane Wood, twin brothers Deane and Donald Sharpe as well as
numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Elizabeth was the
fifth of eight children born to Anna Eliza and Wilkie Ray Sharpe on her father's
ranch, the White Star Ranch, in Munson, Alberta on February 1, 1925. She spent
the early years of her life on the family farm, attending the White Star
schoolhouse, a one room school. The family moved from the farm when Elizabeth
was 13, to the town of Drumheller where Elizabeth completed her high school
education. It was here that Elizabeth greatly enjoyed playing back-catcher on
the school softball team; her love for baseball remaining with her throughout
her life. It was also here at age 14, that she met Stanley Enos Campbell. Stan
and Elizabeth dated until Stan's discharge from the R.C.A.F. and they were
married on February 18, 1945. Nurses training was Elizabeth's chosen path; her
maternal grandmother, mother and eldest sister had all become nurses. Elizabeth
was, unfortunately, denied entrance to nursing school due to a congenital heart
defect, and so she went to work in the Alberta Treasury Branch until she and
Stan started their family. In 1953, Stan, Elizabeth and their three daughters
moved to Calgary, Alberta. Elizabeth involved herself in the P.T.A., escorting
her daughters to various lessons and helping Stan remodel their home. An avid
sport enthusiast, Elizabeth took up curling in the early 1970's, playing for the
Glendale Ladies. It was also about this time that she became involved with the
Canadian Cancer Society's 'Reach to Recovery program', and for the next 11 years
served as a rehabilitation counsellor and telephone convener. Following an
enjoyable vacation with Elizabeth's sister Jeane and her husband Stan Wood on
Texada Island, B.C. in July 1987, the couple made the decision to move to
Gillies Bay in 1988. Stan was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1996 and
for the last few years of Stan's life, Elizabeth was Stan's constant
caregiver. Elizabeth loved the island life, gardening and was a member of the
O.A.P.O and United Church Women's Group. A kind, wonderful, loving friends and
mother, she will be greatly missed by
both her family and friends. 13p
