Sands: Willia Constance March 10, 1922 - June 10, 2003
Willia (nee Lannon) Sands was born in Oyen, AB on March 10, 1922. At the age of
two, her family moved to Drumheller where she grew up and went to school. She
was an accomplished swimmer and skater and loved to help her dad with the
caretaking of the curling rink. In her later teens she enjoyed her job at the
Jenkins grocery store. In 1943 she married her husband Mark Sands and moved to
the family farm in Rosedale. Together they raised two children, Dale and
Sandra. Willia had five grandchildren and four great grandchildren and was a
devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. For 45 years, as like any
farmwife she helped out where needed, doing farm chores and preparing meals.
The coffee was always on and lunch served to anyone who stopped to visit.
Willia also supported her husband, who operated three businesses and knew how to
take a phone order for coal, cement or shale if she had to. Her family was
always her top priority and they could count on her whenever they needed her.
She was a faithful hockey fan especially when Dale or Carson or her
grandchildren, Brent, Randy and Tyler were playing. Better known as Granny
Willia, she was very involved with her older grandchildren's care giving and
their activities. Even though her health prevented her from doing this with her
younger ones, they were very special to her and she was so proud of them. Willia
loved all animals, especially cats and dogs. All the family dogs were very
special and she treated them the same as any family member.
She was the happiest when she could cook and gather the whole family together
for meals. She was famous for her Sunday morning pancakes and her doughnuts
were always a favorite. For the last 15 years, Willia has battled and overcome
many illnesses. She was our mentor in the fact that she never gave up, never
complained and always kept her smile and sense of humor through it all. Willia
will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her husband of 60 years, Mark
Sands of Drumheller; son Dale and daughter-in-law Suzanne Sands of Rosedale; her
daughter Sandra and son-in-law Mark Nicklom of Drumheller. She is also survived
by her grandchildren Brenda (Kevin) Kerik of Red Deer, Brent (Lisa) Sands of
Drumheller, Randy Nicklom (Laura) of Calgary, Kacey and Tyler Nicklom of
Drumheller; great grandchildren Tamara and Jeff Kerik, Ciena and Danica Sands;
her nephew and niece Carson and Susan Brown of Rosedale; and her sister-in-law
Bessie of Drumheller. She is loved and will be missed by her nephew and niece
Al and Marianne Jamieson and Ben of St. Alberta; and nieces Pat (Frank) and
Sharon (Dave); and her brother-in-law Stewart Jamieson of Edmonton. Willia was
predeceased by her parents Bill and Becky Lannon, her daughter-in-law Lorenza
Sands and her sister Isabel Jamieson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent
to Drumheller Area Health Foundation or the S.P.C.A. or that of the donors'
choice. Courtney-Winters Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements. A
memorial service was held for Willia on June 16 at 11 p.m. at the Rosedale Hall.
