Leigh: Irene Grace (nee Fee) passed away peacefully at the Drumheller District Continuing Care on Monday, September 16 at the age of 95 years. She is survived by her loving family: son David Leigh of Drumheller and daughter Mary Leigh-Warden of Vancouver; grandchildren Christy Dinning of Vancouver, Rob Dinning of Vancouver and John Dinning of Dayton, Ohio; and great grandchildren Aden Dinning and Reid Dinning of Dayton, Ohio. Irene was born in Wetaskiwin, Alberta on October 18, 1906. She shared 27 years with her dear sister Gladys, her only sibling, until Gladys' untimely death in 1933. Her father, Francis Fee (from Dublin, Ireland), passed away in 1935 leaving Irene and her mother, Isabelle Jevne Tofte Fee (of Norwegian descent). Irene embarked upon a teaching career which led to many recognitions and distinctions for her classroom teaching, her work as Principal, and her skills in District supervisory and consultative capacities. Irene was also a skilled speed-skater and hockey player. In 1936, at the Wetaskiwin Ice Rink, she met Bert Leigh, an employee at the Wetaskiwin Bank of Montreal. Bert, a novice skater, literally 'fell' for Irene and the pair were married at the home of Irene's mother in June, 1939. Their family grew with the arrival of a son, David Lewis and, later, a daughter, Mary Isabelle. Bert's postings with the Bank of Montreal took the family from Carstairs to Olds, then Morrin, (Bert's first appointment as Manager), followed by the remaining Managerial appointments to Coaldale and, in 1960, Drumheller. All the while, Irene's teaching career blossomed and students, parents, fellow teachers and superintendents alike acknowledged her gift. Irene wrote several resource books (used by the Boards of Education in Saskatchewan and Alberta) in the areas of Music, Art, Social Studies and Mathematics. She was a valued supporter of and contributor to the Drumheller & District Music Festivals and the Kiwanis Music Festivals in Lethbridge - one year, while teaching in Morrin, Irene rehearsed her award-winning contestants for 29 entries in the Drumheller & District Music Festival. Her thespian talents were put to good use with the Coaldale Little Theatre. For children, Irene wrote "The Garden Kids', a book of stories in the fantasy genre. Irene also leaves behind paintings - acrylics, painted in a style she called 'Pop Art', all of which are uniquely conceptual. Irene Leigh will be long remembered for her special caring qualities, her kindnesses to those in need and her sharp intelligence. The family wishes to thank all the wonderful staff at the Drumheller District Continuing Care (guided superbly and sensitively by Debbie Nakonechny, Shelley Hird and Chris Fujita) and the tireless, reliable and compassionate efforts Dr. M. Vacy-Lyle; and, in advance - Rev. Blair Kirkby and the UCW of Knox United Church, Toni Wilson and Susan Vanderburg. Thanks, also, to Courtney-Winter's Funeral Chapel. All who wish to honour the life of Irene Leigh are invited to attend a Memorial Service at Knox United Church, Monday Oct. 21, 2:30 p.m., reception to follow in the Knox Church Hall. In lieu of flowers, Irene would want you to give to the needy (perhaps via The Salvation Army) , or offer donations to the Children's Choir at Knox United Church, or to a children's choir/music endeavor of your choice.
