Bixby: Rocky Bixby of Drumheller passed away Friday, January 4, 2002 at the age of 44 years. Rocky had a great love for music and a special talent for playing guitar and singing. He is survived by his loving family, three daughters, Cindy and Kurtis Sands of Drumheller, Terra of Calgary, and Roxanne of Red Deer; one son Vince and Stephanie of Exshaw; father George of Drumheller; one brother Bud and Shelly of Drumheller; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Rocky was predeceased by his mother Rose in January 1982. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. A celebration for Rocky will be held Friday, January 12, 2002 at 2:00 pm at the Nacmine Community Hall with Pastor Wayne McCrackin officiating. Cremation will follow. Desjarlais: Gloria Desjarlais (nee Rebus), born March 26, 1945, slipped away peacefully at the Drumheller Hospital in the arms of her beloved husband Glen, surrounded by her loving family. Gloria fought a courageous battle with cancer and will be missed by all. Left to celebrate her life are her husband and soul mate Glen; her children Rolland Chapin, Jason (Cheryl) Merkowsky, Vincent Merkowsky; her step-children Kelly, Marty, Kimberly, Mark, and Jennifer; her Daughter-in-law Melanie; and her eight precious grandchildren Katie, Patrick, Alita, Alex, Jayson, Emilee, Cheyenne, and Frankie. She is also survived by, and will be missed dearly by, her mother Mary Rebus; three loving sisters, Judy (Gene) Ostrowski, Mary-Anne (Alan) Farmer, and Holly (Mark); six loving brothers Terry (Susan), Gene (Elaine), Brian (Barb), Robert (Renee), Kenneth, Mark (Debbie); as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Gloria was pre-deceased by her father Joseph on December 23, 1989, as well as her infant son Brent and infant daughter Holly. Gloria worked at the Drumheller District Health Services Complex for the last 17 years and was looking forward to retirement. Her many pleasures in life included a love for ceramics (which she taught out of her home), traveling, Country and Western Jamborees, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren. In celebration of GloriaÕs life, relative and friends are invited to a Prayer Vigil, Wednesday, January 9, 2002 at 7:00 P.M. at St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, January 10, 2002 at 2:00 P.M., at St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church, the Rev. Daniel Stevenot celebrant. Halstead: Leo Erwin Halstead, born June 26, 1907 in Roseneath, Ontario, passed away peacefully at Drumheller Nursing Home January 6, 2002 at the age of 94. He leaves to mourn his two sons Keith and Lloyd both of Carbon; six granddaughters Kim (George) Ingram of Stoughton, Saskatchewan, Sharon (Ian) Appleyard of Carbon, Carmen (Levi) Jackson of Sedley, Saskatchewan, Vicky (Rod) Ahlberg of Longmont, Colorado, Dixie Halstead of Calgary, Dawn (Stephen) Lasby of Stoughton, Saskatchewan; and 6 great-grandchildren Justin, Tyler, Dakota, Cashley, Chance and Riley. Leo spent most of his life in the Carbon area farming, and was also very involved in the community. Leo and Ethel lived on the farm until 1996 before making a move to St. Mary's Lodge in Trochu, and then in 1999 Leo moved to the nursing home. Leo was predeceased by his wife Ethel and Daughter-in-laws Shirley and Darleen Halstead. Funeral services will be Thursday, January 10, 2002 at 2:00 pm at the Carbon United Church with Reverend Black presiding. Hildahl: Penard Hervig Hildahl. It is with sadness we announce the passing of Penard Hervig Hildahl on January 4, 2002 at the Drumheller Nursing Home. Penard was born on June 7, 1918 at Carsland Alberta, the first of seven children born to Elise and Andrew Hildahl. He attended school and worked locally until he was called to duty in the Second World War. On October 30, 1942, he married Mary Louise Harriman in a small ceremony in Vancouver. During the war, he served in the Royal Canadian Navy until 1944. Following his service in the navy, he and Mary moved to the Morrin area where they raised their six children and he farmed until 1999. Penard remained active in the Royal Canadian Legion, maintaining his membership until his passing. He particularly enjoyed his involvement with the Remembrance Day ceremonies and the school programs in connection with the ceremonies. He drove school bus for many years and was very involved in various community activities and programs. Penard and Mary celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary just prior to MaryÕs passing in 1997. Penard leaves to mourn his six children; Bev (Brian) McIntosh from Kamloops B.C., Harvey (Wendy) from Drayton Valley A.B., Penny (Gordon) England from Prince George B.C., Frances (Bob) Avramenko from Calgary A.B., Peter (Hazeline) from Lethbridge A.B., Ellen (Jim) Moore from Airdrie A.B, fourteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, sisters Marie Teare, Esther Brown and Elna Harrison and brother Tom Hildahl. He was predeceased by his wife Mary, parents Elise and Andrew, and sisters Ruth Brown and Lois Slack. Penard's family was always his pride and joy and they will miss him greatly. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 8, 2002, at 2:00pm in the Morrin Community Hall with Pastor Skip MacArthur officiating. A private interment for both Penard and Mary will be at the Strathmore Cemetery at a later date. Plumb: Eric Arthur Plumb. It is with great sadness we announce the death of Eric Arthur Plumb who passed away in his sleep in the T. R. Ross Nursing Home, December 31, 2001. He lived his entire life in Drumheller after being born here June 19, 1917. Eric leaves to mourn his sister-in-law Whipple Plumb, his nieces Trudy Plumb and Sharon (Alex) Dyball and their children Heather, David and Heidi. He was predeceased by his parents Samuel and Gertrude, his sister Eva, his brother Fred, and his wife Annie. Eric spent most of his working days as a grocer serving and meeting people and teasing "the rebels." He also spent a few years driving for Winter's Funeral Home, and occasionally drove the mail truck from Munson to Stettler. He served with the Canadian Army stationed in Britain during World War II, and subsequently helped the Drumheller Sea Cadets. Eric was an active member of St. Magloire's Church, always enjoyed a good hockey game, and loved to travel. As a result, he and Annie were involved for many years with the Seniors Recreational Group bus trips, a group of which he was a founding member. Radke: Herbert "Herb" Radke was called to his eternal home on January 1, 2002, surrounded by his family at the Drumheller Hospital, at the age of 74. Herb was born February 24, 1927 to Gottfried and Mary Radke in Kulm, Bessarabia, Roumania, and came to Canada in June that same year. Herb married Elsie (Moench) on March 25, 1953 in Hanna, Alberta. They farmed in the Hand Hills for one year, then in 1954 moved to a farm north of Craigmyle for two years. In 1956, they left the farm and went to work on road construction, where Herb drove truck, later that year he started working for the CNR and moved to Alsask, Saskatchewan, for two years. In 1959, they moved to Delia where Herb worked for Art Marshall at the John Deer Machinery shop for one year. In 1960, Herb went to work for the Alberta Pacific Grain Company in Trochu where he trained for two months, then in November moved to Munson to work for the same company. In 1968 the company changed to Federal Grain, in 1972 it changed to Alberta Wheat Pool, where he remained and worked until November of 1985 when he had a stroke and was no longer able to work. In May of 1986, they moved to Drumheller and he officially retired from the Pool in 1992. When Herb was growing up he had a love for baseball and pitched for the Hand Hills ball team. When he could no longer play the game he coached a girls softball team in Munson for eight years and the boys team for one year. He enjoyed watching all sports whenever possible. One of his other loves was camping and fishing with his family. Herb also enjoyed playing cards, whenever he could. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife of 48 years Elsie; four children, Lyall (Nancy) Radke, Theresa (Ron) Storch, Kathleen Radke [Jordan], Lane Radke; eight grandchildren, Jason and Holly Radke, Brad, Greg and Kristy Storch, Randy and Nicole Jordan, and Crystal Radke; one sister, Clara Armstrong; two brothers, Ivan (Elnore) Radke and Dave Radke. Herb was predeceased by his parents, Gottfried and Mary Radke; two brothers, Emil and Walter; two sisters, Ella and Tola; and a granddaughter. Funeral Services were held Friday, January 4, 2002 at 11:00 am at Grace Lutheran Church, with Pastor Lloyd Huber Officiating.
